springboot-how to solve Invalid config server configuration or NoRemoteRepositoryException with spring cloud config server

Problem

When we start spring cloud config server that use local file system backend, sometimes, we get this error:

The core error is :

Description:

Invalid config server configuration.

Action:

If you are using the git profile, you need to set a Git URI in your configuration.  If you are using a native profile and have spring.cloud.config.server.bootstrap=true, you need to use a composite configuration.

And this:

Configuration

I created a local directory in file system as the config server’s repository: /Users/bswen/bswen-github/configs

The configuration that caused the error is as following:

spring.cloud.config.server.native.search-locations=file://///Users/bswen/bswen-github/configs
server.port=8888

Reason

The above configuration do NOT specify the config server’s profile, if you want to use local file system directory as the config repository, you should use the native profile.

According to the official document of spring cloud:

There is also a “native” profile in the Config Server that does not use Git but loads the config files from the local classpath or file system (any static URL you want to point to with spring.cloud.config.server.native.searchLocations). To use the native profile, launch the Config Server with spring.profiles.active=native.

The search locations can contain placeholders for {application}, {profile}, and {label}. In this way, you can segregate the directories in the path and choose a strategy that makes sense for you (such as subdirectory per application or subdirectory per profile).

If you do not use placeholders in the search locations, this repository also appends the {label} parameter of the HTTP resource to a suffix on the search path, so properties files are loaded from each search location and a subdirectory with the same name as the label (the labelled properties take precedence in the Spring Environment). Thus, the default behaviour with no placeholders is the same as adding a search location ending with /{label}/. For example, file:/tmp/config is the same as file:/tmp/config,file:/tmp/config/{label}. This behavior can be disabled by setting spring.cloud.config.server.native.addLabelLocations=false.

Solution

So the final configuration file of the spring cloud config server that use file system backend should be as follows:

spring.profiles.active=native
spring.cloud.config.server.composite.type=composite
spring.cloud.config.server.native.search-locations=file://///Users/bswen/bswen-github/configs

You can see that we add a line to the properties file:

spring.profiles.active=native

The native profile tells spring cloud config server to use the local file system as the backend, it would search the config files in local directory specified by spring.cloud.config.server.native.search-locations.
